# Pause and resume a sandbox (/guides/pause-and-resume-sandbox)

Pause preserves a sandbox while stopping active compute charges where the provider supports it.
Resume returns a paused sandbox to `ready`.

## Provider support [#provider-support]

Reliable pause and resume are available through CodeSandbox, E2B, Freestyle, Northflank, and
Runloop. Other providers return `capability_unsupported`. Daytona pause reporting is currently
inconsistent.

## Pause [#pause]

The sandbox must be `ready`. Keep the returned operation ID until it reaches a terminal state.

    ```ts
    const mutation = await metal.sandboxes.pauseAsync(sandbox.id);
    const operation = await metal.operations.wait(mutation.operation);
    if (operation.state !== "succeeded") {
      throw new Error(operation.error?.message ?? `Pause ${operation.state}`);
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab value="CLI">
    ```bash
    openmetal sandbox pause <sandbox-id>
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Resume [#resume]

The sandbox must be `paused`.

<Tabs items="["TypeScript", "CLI"]">
  <Tab value="TypeScript">
    ```ts
    const mutation = await metal.sandboxes.resumeAsync(sandbox.id);
    const operation = await metal.operations.wait(mutation.operation);
    if (operation.state !== "succeeded") {
      throw new Error(operation.error?.message ?? `Resume ${operation.state}`);
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab value="CLI">
    ```bash
    openmetal sandbox resume <sandbox-id>
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Do not automatically submit the same lifecycle action again after an uncertain response. Inspect
the sandbox and original operation before deciding how to recover.
